I just read Mike Melanson’s post about the surge building to get people to quit Facebook. Mike did a great job shedding light on how the distrust of Facebook’s privacy policy (haters would say the lack of a policy) is so prevalent that there’s an official movement with a website – QuitFacebookDay.com.
Wow.
I’m not surprised that a site like this exists. It’s simple to put up a site to support a cause. I guess that I am struck with the mounting hatred for the world’s most popular social network. It’s getting more serious. People are putting their money where their mouth is.
Don’t misinterpret me. I didn’t write this to take a side on this issue. Instead, from a business perspective I’m struck by how fast the tides turn. I understand that Facebook has been questioned about their privacy strategies since day 1. But things are different now. Opposition is mounting.
I’m fascinated to watch what happens with not only the ‘Quit Facebook Day’ movement, but also with Facebook’s brass. What are they going to do? Will they reach out and acknowledge their issue and their doubters? Or are they just going to hunker down and let this blow over?
What do you think they should do?
By the way, if you want to quit Facebook but don’t want to wait until May 31, here’s how.
What are your thoughts? How are you feeling about Facebook these days? Do you think this movement will gain momentum? Let’s discuss below.
